FOR AUTHORS AND AGENTS
McBooks Press Writers Guidelines
McBooks Press publishes a mix of fiction and nonfiction titles. Recently we restructured and as a result of this, we have scaled back our publishing for the foreseeable future. At this time, we are currently seeking a few extremely high-quality manuscripts, both fiction and non-fiction.
In the current tough book market, the author's ability to use the internet for self promotion is almost as important as his/her ability to tell a great story really well. Unfortunately, writing ability alone are not enough. Show that you're savvy with personal web sites, blogs, and social networking. And show you know who your audience is and how to generate word-of-mouth.
Guidelines:
For Nonfiction:
We prefer that authors submit a query letter first rather than a manuscript or excerpt. In the query letter, please let us know what your manuscript is about and in what way it differs from other comparable works currently on the market. Please also give a word count for you manuscript and let us know something about yourself: your background and any relevant information that supports your qualification for writing this book. As mentioned above, your ability to self-promote your work will go a long way toward helping to ensure your book is a success, so show us you know how to put yourself in the limelight. You may send the query letter via e-mail or U.S. snail mail. If you send the letter via U.S. mail, please be sure to enclose a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for a reply.
Based on the query letter you provide, we will decide whether we wish to see some of the manuscript. If so, we will contact you and request an excerpt. If the excerpt interests us, we may ask you to send the full manuscript.
For Fiction:
We are looking for a few good novels. Historical fiction has been our mainstay, and it is still of special interest to us, but currently we are open to almost any genre or style, except romance, science fiction/fantasy, and children's. Our main criteria is an exceptionally strong story combined with an author who can show he/she has a good grasp of self-promotion through networking, personal appearances and tireless internet presence.
Send a cover letter with a three-chapter excerpt. In your cover letter, give us a general idea of the scope of your story, including any aspects of the plot or characterization that set your novel apart from anything else out there. You should also include any biographical information that seems relevant to the story you have written. (For instance, if you spent a summer playing the part of a ship builder at a living history museum as college student and now you have written a novel set in a Colonial harbor town: that would be relevant information.) We will let you know if your initial contact interests us enough for us to request the full manuscript.
For Both Nonfiction and Fiction:
You may submit material to us either through e-mail, or through U.S. mail. When sending excerpts through e-mail, please include them as attachments, rather than cutting and pasting them into the body of your e-mail. When sending an excerpt via U.S. mail, please include an SASE for our reply. If you wish us to return your work, please ensure the SASE is large enough and has enough postage for the excerpt. Otherwise, if you prefer us to recycle your submission, let us know and we will do so and simply send you a reply letter.
Please be aware that the process from query letter to a reply on a full manuscript can take months. Like all publishers, McBooks takes very seriously any submissions we receive, but unfortunately, as is true throughout the industry, we have very limited time to spend on the large volume of submissions we receive. Rest assured, you will eventually receive an answer to your submission.
